The second paper assignment for English 102 will be a 3-4 page paper in which you will use the techniques of close reading to interpret poetry.

1.  Choosing two poems from the textbook, write an essay in which you compare and contrast how authors treat the same subject in different poems.  If you want to choose two poems not on this list, make sure to say so in your prospectus.

Suggestions (Some selections have more than two choices; choose any two or choose your own poems):

  1. (Culture and ethnicity) "Lost Sister" (1142), "Leaves" (1101)
  2. (Love poems) "The Canonization" (897), “To My Dear and Loving Husband" (1075),  "Conjoined" (743), “True Love” (1008), "Variation on the Word 'Sleep'" (1072)
  3. (Meeting death) "Because I could not stop for death” (620), "I heard a Fly buzz--when I died" (1023),  "I have a Rendezvous  with Death" (1136), "Mid-term Break" (772)
  4. (African-American experience) "Sympathy" (1092),  "Negro" (1109), “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” (969), "A Black Man Talks of Reaping" (1078), "I Know I'm Not Sufficiently Obscure" (706), "In Bondage" (870)
  5. (War) "Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind" (1137), "Anthem for Doomed Youth" (750), "Ogichidag" (625), "wahbegan" (1122)
  6. (Death of animals) "Traveling through the Dark" (1145),  “Burying an Animal on the Way to New York” (1146).
  7. (War) "Song of Napalm" (1154) and "Dulce et Decorum Est" (760)

  10. (Body and spirit) "Desire" (977), "The Spirit is Too Blunt an Instrument" (978), "The Planned Child" (776)
  11. (Native American experience and tradition) "Ghosts" (1122), "Remember" (739)

. Using the techniques of close, line-by-line reading, write an interpretive analysis of one of the poems listed below. The overall question is this: What is the poet trying to say? What techniques are used to express the poet's ideas effectively?  If   you want to write on a single poem, these are the only poems available for this paper.

    · Cathy Song, "Lost Sister" (1142)
    · William Stafford, "Traveling through the Dark" (1145)
    · Mary Oliver, "Ghosts" (1122)
3.  Write an essay in which you use the techniques of close reading to explore the ways in which poets have used a  particular character or symbol from mythology or classic literature. Here are some possibilities:
    · "Ulysses" (933) and "Penelope" (932) and "Odysseus" (931) (write about the character and legend of Ulysses as represented in these poems); you may also choose other poems from this section.
    · Icarus (see poems on pages 937-942)
