The Tri-State trial had 7 clones from each growing location, including the standards - Ranger
Russet and Russet Burbank. None of the entries out-performed Russet Burbank when grown in
WA. Two clones, AO92017-6 and A89219-7, received higher overall scores than Russet
Burbank when grown in ID and OR. Changes in fry color and reducing sugars during storage at
48oF could not be evaluated for the clones grown in OR this year, due to a limited number of
tubers. Hence, total rating scores for the OR-grown clones are based on a maximum of 25 (35
for ID and WA). The 'out-of-35' score for OR-grown Russet Burbank is also given for
comparison among states. The 3-state average rating was thus calculated based on a total
possible score of 31.6 for each clone. A89219-7, AO90014-1 and AO92017-6 outperformed
Russet Burbank when averaged across all three states.
AO92017-6 received a three-state average of 26.1, of the total possible points. Relative to the
other clones, it produced light fries after storage for about 1.5 months at all storage temperatures
(40, 44 and 48oF). When stored at 40F, fries from AO92017-6 received a relatively light USDA
color rating of 2 or 3. Furthermore, this clone scored as high or higher than Russet Burbank in
the French fry taste panel evaluations. It was also more resistant to bacterial soft rot decay than
Russet Burbank. The bruise potential of AO92017-6 was lower, on average, than either of the
standard cultivars. Length to width ratios of AO92017-6 were slightly lower than that of Ranger
or Russet Burbank.
A89219-7 received a three-state average of 23 points. It produced unacceptably dark fries when
stored at 44F. This clone also produced the roundest-shaped tubers of all entries in the trial this
season.
The two clones with the poorest performance were A9045-7 and A90586-11. From ID and OR,
both clones produced relatively dark French fries prior to storage (USDA ratings of 1 or 2).
These two clones also produced unacceptably dark fries when stored at 44F for approximately
1.5 months.
The length to width ratios of Ranger and Russet Burbank tubers were 1.7 from WA and 2 or greater when grown in ID and OR. None of the clones produced tubers with ratios greater than those of the standard cultivars when grown in the same location. The clone A89219-7 produced tubers with the lowest ratios, ranging between 1.38 and 1.63, indicating that fry yield per tuber may be lower than that for the other clones.
