Professional Experience
M. Grant Norton is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Chair of the Materials Science Program. He received his B.Sc. degree with honors in Chemistry from Southampton University in the UK. In 1989 he obtained his Ph.D. and D.I.C. from Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. From 1981 to 1989 Norton worked for two multinational industrial companies in Europe before moving to Cornell University for a postdoctoral. He joined Washington State University in 1991 and was promoted to his present position in 1996. Dr. Norton’s research interests lie in the field of electron microscopy. His most recently funded research is the characterization of two-dimensional photonic crystals for near IR and visible optoelectronic applications. He is active in involving undergraduates in research and is co-PI of the REU site in Characterization of Advanced Materials. He is also interested in the history of materials and materials education. Dr. Norton has received several awards for his teaching including the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Outstanding Teaching Award for the Pacific Northwest in 1996. He is author or co-author of over 100 articles in the archival literature and co-author of a textbook on X-ray diffraction.
