This
past summer I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Julie Andsager
to conduct research entitled "Who We are, Who We Want to Be, Who
We Will Be: Construction of Gender Roles in Childrens's Saturday
Morning Programming." I presented my work at the 2nd annual
Washington State University McNair Research Symposium.
Abstract
Children's television programs have been argued to give our children
mixed messages about the Ðreal world¼ and the roles people play
in it. Those particular messages include ideas about gender roles,
race and occupational sex role stereotypes. It has been
proven the messages that can be learned from Saturday morning
cartoons can impact children”s thoughts on what they want to be
when they Ðgrow up.¼ The images of gender and of occupational
roles shown today have become slightly less rigid than many of
the images shown in the past. We also see that gender roles have
stayed very stereotypical and consistent with the male patriarchal
standards.
