Current
Research Interests
This
past summer I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Jose Alamillo
to conduct research entitled "Building Bridges Through Spanish-Language
Radio in the Pacific Northwest." I presented my work at
the 2nd annual Washington State University McNair Research Symposium
and the 10th annual Ronald E. McNair National Research Conference.
I hope to also present at the NACCS conference in spring.
Abstract
This case study reveals the role that locally owned commercial
primary Spanish language radio station, KZHR 92.5 FM has played
in the economic, cultural, religious, and political growth of
the Mexican-Chicana/o community in the Tri-Cities. Using
oral history interviews and archival materials I argue that Spanish-language
media is essential to the future growth of Mexican-Chicana/o communities
in the Pacific Northwest and that there is sufficient evidence
to foster further study in the area of community empowerment via
Spanish-language media.
