Biography
In Spring of 2003 I graduated from Colorado State University with a Masters of Science degree from the School of Education in Student Affairs in Higher Education. My Masters thesis is entitled, "Chicano(a) and Mexican-American College Students: Is there a Relationship between Academic Self-Concept and Academic Achievement?". In Fall of 2003 I will be starting a Ph.D. program in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies with a concentration in the Foundation of Education at the University of Kansas.

McNair Research
Through the McNair Achievement Program I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Fred Inaba, an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, on a summer research project. We identified and surveyed Pacific Northwest companies who made regular shipments of freight to Asia. We specifically targeted companies that had joined and started Shipping Associations as a result of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998-United States that had passed May of 1999. Shipping Associations are non-profit organizations, which are controlled by the membership. In theory, Shipping Associations would allow small and medium shippers to compete effectively and competitively through the concept of economies of scale with large shippers in the United States. The Shipping Association membership hopes to gain contracts and services that are equitable to large shippers negotiations with carriers in their respective markets.
The project was finished and presented as both an oral and a poster presentation at the McNair Scholar Summer Research Symposium on July 28, 2000. Here is the abstract:

An economic analysis and study of the ocean liner shipping industry in response to the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998

The goal of this paper is to see how small, medium and large shippers react to changes in the ocean liner shipping industry in response to the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998.  It will focus primarily on the importance of negotiating contracts with carriers and the choice to use a shippers own leverage or the leverage of a third party agent.  We hypothesize that large shippers will be more supportive of OSRA at negotiating favorable rates as compared to small shippers. To explore our hypothesis we collected data from a wide variety of industries that ship from Pacific Coast ports to Asia.  Finally, the paper discusses desirable shipments through the eyes of carriers and shippers.
