AKA
Kappa Sigma Chapter
On January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C sixteen glorious women had a vision to be of service to all mankind. This vision gave way to the formation of the first Greek lettered organization for Black women. Since its founding and incorporation Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to succeed and uphold to the fundamentals of its inception. This illustrious organization is a sisterhood composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
There are over 750 chapters that serve Alpha Kappa Alpha, one of those is Kappa Sigma. The Kappa Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered on May 22, 1976 on the campus of Washington State University, making it the first black Greek organization on this campus.
