Goals of 153: All of the following goals are interdependent and equally important.

  1. Increase of musical skills (vocabulary, clef readings, rhythm reading, interval identification, chord building, scale building, and beginning use of music software.
  2. Appreciation of Western art music through listening to music of all time periods, and becoming acquainted with various musical styles from chant to minimalism.
  3. Creativity of original melodies reflecting new skills, and increased listening observations. Student Computer Services at Duncan Dunn and Todd Hall computer labs are set up with ENCORE music software to aid in the notation of compositions.
  4. Establishment of personal e-mail address.

Conduct: Collegiality, respectful discussion and courtesy will be the chosen mode of interaction by all who wish to remain in this classroom.

Attendance: Attendance at every class is required. If you miss more than three classes (for whatever reasons), your final exam will have half-a-letter grade subtracted from its total for each absence.

If you are unavoidably late for class, enter the class, and sit on the floor near the door. Do not go searching for a seat until there is a break in the class, for it is disruptive to others in these large classes.

1. Save all class exams, homework assignments, e-mail correspondence, and papers. If a grade is missing, the burden of proof is on you.
2. The teaching assistants, tutors (upon request), and I are available for help during office hours. You must bring the workbook with the examples already attempted.

Contract: Remaining in this course constitutes an agreement to abide by the terms listed above. If you do not accept these terms, please drop the course now.
