Almost 60 percent of the revenue for WSU operations come from non-state sources. Of this $289 million in 1996 revenue, $88.5 million were received from student tuition and fees. Because of its federally recognized land-grant status, WSU receives a healthy infusion of federal support, amounting to $72.8 million in fiscal 1996. Auxiliary services such as housing and dining, as well as sales and services from educational activities, account for $72.6 million. Private grants and contracts, gifts and investment income produced 11 percent or $55.4 million of the university’s total budget in fiscal 1996.
