WSU Spokane Announces 2000 Staff Excellence Award
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Elizabeth (Liz) West, financial aid program coordinator at Washington State University Spokane, has been selected as the 2000 WSU Spokane Employee Excellence Award winner.
Joan Menzies, director of student services, said in making the nomination, "I often hear from students who take the time to tell me how much they appreciate Lizís willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. She sees a need, proposes a program or procedure to meet the need, and then volunteers to take it on."
Examples Menzies cites include organization of volunteers, including West herself, to host international students for Thanksgiving dinner and to provide housing for new international students for a few days when they first arrive in Spokane so they have a place to stay as they search for an apartment. Menzies and others who nominated her agree: "Liz West exemplifies what an employee should be."
West holds an undergraduate degree in liberal arts from Denison University, Ohio, and is working toward a masterís in college student affairs at Azusa Pacific University, California. She has worked for WSU for almost 20 years, including nearly 18 years as a program support supervisor in the continuing education program at the ICNE/WSU College of Nursing. She joined WSU Spokane in 1998 and serves on the WSU Employee Complaint Committee.
West volunteers in the community as well, especially in areas addressing social concerns and needs in Spokane. She works as church coordinator for Spokaneís Interfaith Hospitality Network, which coordinates volunteers, food, transportation and beds for the homeless on site at her church.
The Employee Excellence Award is sponsored by PEMCO Insurance and carries a $1,000 award. Recipients are nominated by co-workers and chosen for their quality of work, contribution to the work environment and contributions to the larger community.
