April 3, 2000 Contact: WSU Faculty Senate Proclaims April 17 PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State Universitys faculty senate has proclaimed April 17 as "Sam and Pat Smith Day of Recognition" at WSU. In a unanimous vote during its March 30 meeting, the senate honored WSU President Sam Smith, who retires this summer after 15 years leading the university, and his wife, Pat. The day of recognition will include breakfast, noontime and afternoon activities on campus honoring the Smiths. The proclamation says Sam Smith has worked "tirelessly to increase both the scope and stature" of WSUs programs since becoming its president in 1985. "The success of those efforts is obvious in the universitys achievement of Research I status, its high quality programs and faculty, and its increased statewide presence." Pat Smith has "labored diligently to support and promote Washington State Universitys Museum of Art," the proclamation says. She was "instrumental in the decision to build a new museum as a focal point of activities at the university for both visitors and members of the community." On April 17, there will be a staff/faculty breakfast from 7:30-9 a.m. in the Compton Union Buildings Carey Ballroom. From 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., a student-organized recognition celebration will be held on Terrell Mall. In case of bad weather, the event will be moved into the CUB. Concluding the day is a 4 p.m. community/university reception and program held in the Lighty Student Services Building's atrium. Free parking will be available in all lots and in the Fine Arts parking structure. A memory book is being compiled for the Smiths. Notes, pictures or other memorabilia can be sent to Memory Book, WSU President's Office, 422 French Administration Building, Pullman, WA 99164-1048.
