  Strategic Plan Implementation

The completion of a written strategic plan document marks an important milestone in the planning process, but major benefits accrue to the University only when the plan is put into operation. Achieving the established goals will require effort and attention from every part of the institution. It also requires considerable management and coordination. For this purpose an Implementation Council and four implementation teams were established in the spring of 2002.

These groups will organize and track the progress toward accomplishing the goals and sub goals of the plan. Annually, the President will report to the Board of Regents on progress made in achieving the goals of the strategic plan.

Chair, Implementation Council

Implementation Council

The Implementation Council is responsible for management and accountability of the strategic plan execution. The council will:

  • Coordinate and oversee the activities of the four implementation teams.
  • Approve metrics to measure the success of meeting stated goals. Assign responsibility for collecting, analyzing and reporting progress.
  • Assess the activities of the implementation teams in addressing each of the sub-goals of the strategic plan.
  • Periodically and at least annually report to the President and the University community on the progress made in implementing the strategic plan.
  • Make recommendations to the President of future actions for continual improvement.

The co-chairs of the four implementation teams will include representatives from the Implementation Council.

Implementation Teams

For each of the four goals, an implementation team will be responsible for implementing the strategic plan, including developing and enhancing the list of required actions, devising implementation steps, and assuring accountability. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Expanding, enhancing or refining the list of required actions for each sub goal.
  • Assigning responsibility for each required action to units or individuals.
  • Coordinating the activities of the parties assigned to implement aspects of the action plan.
  • Working with colleges and other units to tie area plans to the university plan.
  • Where feasible developing measurable outcomes and timetables for each required action.
  • Assessing, evaluating and documenting the success in accomplishing the desired outcomes.
  • Recommending to the President the creation of external task forces if needed for fund raising or other activities pertinent to achieving the goal.
  • Periodically reporting to the Implementation Council on the progress made in implementing the strategic plan or on problems encountered.
  • Prescribing future actions for continual improvement.

Individuals including administrators with major responsibility for the goal and other University leaders with knowledge, experience and proven judgment in areas addressed by the goal are on each team. Administrative and faculty representatives serve as co-chairs.
