JBIG is a portable image compression library which can be incorporated into application software. The JBIG algorithm separates encoded image data into planes, layers and stripes. This compressed data stream is called a bi-level image entity (BIE). Detailed information concerning the algorithm and use of JBIG can be found in the man page listed below.
