Samuel H. Smith Leadership Award

This award was established by AFW in recognition of the efforts of Dr. Sam Smith (WSU President 1985-2000) to promote the role of women at WSU.  During his tenure as WSU's President, yearly salary equity reviews, a sexual harassment policy, and faculty partner accommodation plans were instituted.  The concept of the award was first announced at a reception in his honor on November 3, 1999, and it was first awarded in 2000.

The award is presented annually to an AFW member who has a strong record of leadership in advancing the role of women in the Washington State University system and/or who has demonstrated leadership in higher education, the community, or her profession at the local, state, regional, national, and/or international level in private, government, or professional organizations.

Outstanding Women in Graduate Studies Awards

In the mid 1980's, the Association for Faculty Women established two annual awards for outstanding women in graduate studies at WSU.  These awards recognize superlative academic and scholarly achievements, as well as the professional potential of WSU's women graduate students.  Both full-time and part-time women students who are completing WSU graduate degrees in any field at any WSU location are eligible.

The AFW Harriett B. Rigas Award recognizes the accomplishments of an outstanding doctoral student.  It was named in honor of  Harriett B. Rigas , a former faculty member at WSU and an electrical engineer with an international reputation for her hybrid computer and computer simulation research.

The AFW Founders Award recognizes the accomplishments of an outstanding master's student
