Australopithicus robustus: Important archaeological sites
- Page 3 -
Australopithicus robustus and closely related species are known to have lived from at least 2 to approximately 1 million years ago in eastern and southern Africa. New discoveries have tentatively pushed their age back toward 3 million years. The larger skulls with the distinctive dorsal crest are thought to belong to males. The smaller specimens in the fossil remains of these species are thought to represent females. The relationships among the several species currently identified are conjectural at this point. It is highly probable that more species will be identified from currently known remains, and new finds are still occurring.
