Joining a Social Greek Chapter at WSU

Community Service

WSU’s fraternity and sorority community is committed to giving back to the Pullman community. The Greek Community at WSU engages in more community service hours per academic year than any other organizations on campus. Additionally, Greeks raised over $75,000 for various charitable organizations this year including $21,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Individual chapters sponsor athletic events and other competitions to raise money, and the Greek community comes together to provide service through programs like the Adopt-a-Block clean up, Cougar Pride Days and American Red Cross blood drives.

Being a part of the Greek community at WSU is an extraordinary experience when it comes to giving back to the community. WSU’s Greeks are dedicated to giving back to the community that has given them so much.

Many individual chapters take part in their own community service projects. These projects include food drives, putting up Christmas lights for the city of Pullman, Adopt A-Highway, and The Children’s Carnival at Jefferson Elementary. Individual chapters are always contributing to the Pullman community. The 14 Panhellenic sororities contributed over 8,750 hours of community service in the spring semester alone. Service to the community in which you live is a fulfilling aspect of being Greek.

Community service is not the only way that WSU Greeks give back. Every individual chapter raises money for various charitable organizations, and has their own way of doing so. Some recent philanthropic even include:

• The Run Against Hunger, where Kappa Sigma runs the Apple Cup game ball across the State of Washington

• Gamma Alpha Omega hosts an annual food drive, “Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat,” in October to collect supplies for the Pullman Food Bank.

• Kappa Alpha Theta raised over $10,000 for the sale of their Men of WSU calendar which benefits Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

• Alpha Gamma Rho holds an annual event, “Barn Daze,” to raise money for the Wishing Star Foundation, which is highlighted by the sorority flag football tournament

• Alpha Phi Alpha hosted a community forum on Martin Luther King Jr. in partnership with the Black Student Union to raise awareness about the history of civil rights.

• Kappa Kappa Gamma’s benefit dinner for Osteosarcoma which raises thousands of dollars for the cause.

• Lambda Chi Alpha helps host a benefit dinner for the Whitman County Humane Society which raises thousands of dollars for the cause.

• Pi Beta Phi hosts tell-a-sister which raised awareness for HPV.

• Pi Kappa Alpha raised over $10,000 for Relay for Life

Every Greek chapter hosts events like the above to raise money for different charitable organizations. Being a part of the Greek community allows students to combine resources and give large, meaningful donations to these charities, while making it an enjoyable experience to give back. There is no better feeling than helping those in need, and by being part of the Greek community you have that opportunity every day.
