CERTIFICATION
In order to assure that all University employees can be afforded
quick and effective first aid attention, specified University personnel
are to obtain first aid certification in a course approved by the Washington
State Department of Labor and Industries.
The WSU Department of Public Safety offers an approved basic certification
course. Employees take refresher training every two years to keep the certification
current.
REQUIREMENTS
Workplaces
The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that individuals
certified in first aid are available in the workplace.
Whenever a workplace is occupied by employees there must be an individual
holding a valid certificate of first aid training present or available.
(WAC 296-24-06120)
Supervisors
All supervisors or persons in charge of crews must be trained
and certified in first aid unless their duties require them to be away from
the job site. In such cases, other persons are to be trained and certified
in first aid practices. (WAC 296-24-06120)
Additional Employees
If a demonstrated need is established, management may designate
additional employees to be trained/certified to surpass or augment the standard
requirements.
Field Trips
It is recommended that student field trips include an individual
with current first aid certification.
COURSES
To meet these basic requirements, Public Safety provides first
aid courses conducted at any WSU campus or large research and extension
facility.
Departments are charged a set fee for each departmental attendee. Contact
Public Safety for current course fees.
Class Size
Classes accommodate a maximum of 15 students and a minimum of
6.
Criteria
First aid classes are filled from a waiting list. Priority is
based upon the following criteria:
- Number of employees in the requesting department.
- Ratio of certified first-aid qualified employees in the department.
- Degree of hazard potential in the department.
- Location of the job site; proximity to an ambulance service.
- Proximity to other departments' first aid qualified employees.
NO SHOWS
An employee who signs up for a first aid class is to notify
Public Safety prior to the class presentation if he or she cannot attend.
If an employee does not notify Public Safety in advance, his or her departmental
budget is assessed the regular course fee.
