Regulated Areas

REGULATED AREAS
A regulated area is an area with restricted entry. See S80.70.
HUMAN CONSUMABLES
Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew, use, or store items such as
food, beverages, cosmetics, and tobacco products in regulated areas.
WORKER'S WASHING FACILITIES
WSU provides personal washing facilities. (WAC 296-800-23065)
- Provides a shower for each ten workers of each sex or proportionate
number, who are required to shower during the shift.
- Provides soap for the worker's showers.
- Installs showers with mixing faucet.
- Provides workers who use showers with clean towels. Deposit soiled
towels in contaminated collection containers. (S80.74)
CHANGE ROOMS
WSU provides clean change rooms where workers can change from
street wear to protective clothing and equips the change rooms with storage
facilities for street clothes. Protective clothing is stored in storage
facilities separate from street clothes storage.
TOILETS
Toilets in regulated areas must be in a separate room.
CONTAMINATION CONTROL
Laboratory workers and supervisors must make every effort to
contain the chemical carcinogens in the regulated areas.
Moving Equipment/Supplies
Do not cause contamination in nonregulated areas when removing
equipment, material, or other items from a regulated area. All such items
are to be decontaminated prior to removal.
Decontamination Procedures
Establish and implement decontamination procedures to remove
carcinogens from the surfaces of materials, equipment, and the decontamination
facility.
Sweeping and Mopping
Prohibit dry sweeping and dry mopping in the laboratory. Use
only wet methods.
Air Pressure
Maintain negative air pressure within regulated areas.
- Use local area exhaust ventilation to satisfy this requirement.
- Clean makeup air replaces exhausted air.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR AREA
Register the director or principal investigator of the regulated
area in writing with Environmental Health and Safety, the WSU Biosafety
Committee, and the appropriate department and college.
