Give me a green parking permit,
hold the mayo

BY Brad Redford, Contributing Writer

The former home of WSU’s on-campus Burger King, 1020 NE Colorado St., will soon be the new home for WSU’s Parking and Transportation Services. No, there will be no drive-through window service.

The Board of Regents was asked on Aug. 31 to purchase the building from the WSU Foundation for the "original purchase price plus accrued interest," according to a memo to all regents. The foundation purchased the property early this year for $550,000.

The building will house Parking and Transportation Services—now located in the campus Public Safety Building—and provide additional space for the WSU police and fire departments, said John Shaheen, assistant director of Public Safety.

"Space in the Public Safety Building is maxed out," Shaheen said, describing current working space conditions as "substandard."

Greg Royer, vice president of business affairs, saw the purchase as a wise investment, noting that it would cost less to improve the old Burger King than to build a new facility. In addition, it will provide an opportunity for the police and fire departments to "establish their presence on College Hill."

Lt. Scott West of WSU Police said a satellite station would be located at the site to have better coverage on WSU’s north side and be closer to Greek Row.
