Whitman County Blood Drive July 10

Summer traditionally is a challenging time for the American Red Cross to collect blood. Unfortunately, it is also a peak demand period for blood in hospitals. As a result, the Pacific Northwest is on "yellow alert" for all blood types. To help overcome the shortage, the Whitman County Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding a blood drive from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the Colfax United Methodist Church, located at South Mill and East Canyon.

Due to the shortage, the American Red Cross said it only is able to supply its hospital customers with 70 to 80% of the blood they order. Nationally, supplies for type O-positive and O-negative have dipped below critical levels.

To register to donate, please call JoAnne Akely, interim executive director, American Red Cross, 332-2304. Blood donors must be 17 years old or older, weigh at least 105 pounds and be in good general health.
