Economic Development Strategies

WSU believes that enhanced educational opportunities for students and greater likelihood of research partnerships through SIRTI as well as with local health care facilities, business, and industry will provide economic growth for Spokane. To strengthen even more such potential, the College of Business and Economics has proposed to establish an Executive Development Center in Spokane. The development of the Center will be coordinated by the College of Business and Economics, to offer an array of noncredit executive and management development programs in Spokane. It would complement the existing programs and courses offered through WSU Extension, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, and the University of Idaho. Some programs will be offered cooperatively with these same institutions.

The WSU International Business Institute, working closely with Whitworth College's Institute and Graduate School of International Management, is prepared to cooperatively offer certificate programs in international business and management for both American managers and international managers in Spokane. One to three-day programs would be offered in a number of areas including Consumer Satisfaction, Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, Information Technology Applications for Small Business, Computer Application Development Tools, Real Estate Continuing Education, Insurance Continuing Education and Exporting. The Small Business Development Center will also participate by offering an expanded group of business training courses and certificate programs. The Center will provide a link to the Spokane business community and can be responsive to changing needs within that community. International Programs, in concert with Spokane partners, will provide international education and economic development support to an array of programs and businesses.
