WSU and SIRTI
Appendix F
Current SIRTI-WSU collaboration
The Spokane Intercollegiate Research & Technology Institute helps private companies, academicians and innovative entrepreneurs transform new technologies into products. To date, WSU and SIRTI have collaborated along three fronts:
1. SIRTI has directly funded eight WSU technology development projects at approximately $720,000 and three other projects in which faculty participated either as entrepreneurs or as subcontractors to companies. Funded areas include bio, digital, environmental and energy technologies. SIRTI and WSU have begun discussing the potential for collaborative projects in precision agriculture, non-thermal food processing, wood technology, and materials science.
2. WSU and SIRTI jointly support a microelectronics laboratory that is used for academic instruction and research as well as for assisting technology-based enterprises.
3. The SIRTI-WSU partnership is evolving to include broader, thematic approaches to research and commercialization. The first effort, to establish a Center for Acoustic Research, is being led by SIRTI and EECS Professor Margaret Mortz. Projects within the center will involve multi institutional, interdisciplinary teams funded by federal dollars, a model that, if successful, will be applied to other technology areas.
Thoughts for future collaboration
Research and development. Convene a meeting with WSU, SIRTI, The Heart Institute, area hospitals and the private sector to explore common research interests and opportunities for commercially relevant projects in medical biotechnology.
Technology marketing. Link SIRTI's capabilities with the Office of Intellectual Property Administration to evaluate the commercial viability of WSU intellectual property, to search for regional corporate partners, and to market WSU technology to licensees.
Space. Jointly secure minor capital from the state to develop SIRTI's open space into laboratories for use by faculty engaged in research with commercialization potential.
