College of Liberal Arts

Department of Psychology

Welcome to Psychology

The field of psychology is both science-driven and practice-oriented and our department offers hands-on experience in both areas. Students interested in exploring the scientific aspects of psychology can work on ground-breaking research with faculty in diverse areas, including neuroscience, sensation and perception, memory and thinking, social relationships, mood disturbances, adult/child clinical disorders and health psychology. Students interested in exploring the practice of psychology can become involved with both clinical practicum experiences and with peer teaching. Psychology can help you better understand yourself and others. Knowledge and application-based experimental and clinical methods are powerful tools offered at WSU that are useful in a variety of career choices.

Our APA-accredited program offers courses leading to the degrees Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology. While working toward a Doctor of Philosophy, a Master of Science may also be awarded. Psychology majors at WSU obtain a solid background in the basic area of psychology, gain knowledge of scientific methods, and have the opportunity to take a variety of courses in applied areas. The skills you acquire by learning to objectively and systematically identify and solve human problems will be useful throughout your life and career. Employers seek employees who have a broad background of knowledge and flexibility to adapt to changing work demands. Our programs are designed for students who: a) wish to study psychology as part of a liberal education; b) plan to use their training in related vocations such as the professions, government organizations, business and industry, and psychological services; and/or c) are preparing for graduate work in psychology.
