Dauod’s book highlights cancer proteomics.

Cancer research focused on the study of proteins is the subject of a new book authored and edited by Sayed S. Daoud, Washington State University associate professor in the College of Pharmacy.

Humana Press of New Jersey, a leading national publisher of books and journals, released the 265-page book, Cancer Proteomics: From Bench to Bedside, in December for medical and scientific professionals. It is part of the publisher’s book series “Cancer Drug Discovery and Development.”

Book includes information from experts worldwide
The book took about 20 months to complete and contains information from many outstanding scientists and clinicians from all over the world, according to Dr. Daoud.

The longtime scientist concentrates his own current research on cancer treatment that combines proteomics and genomics, which is the same biotechnological approach used to study genes—multidisciplinary and with new technology.

Proteomics is a branch of biotechnology that uses a multidisciplinary approach and new technology to study disease-related biomarkers in proteins. A biomarker is a biochemical presence that can indicate the progress of disease or the effects of treatment.

Research focuses on gene associated with breast cancer
Dr. Daoud focuses on the p53 gene, which is found to be mutated or dysfunctional in more than 50 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer. These patients tend to have a poor prognosis for treatment, relapses, and low levels of response to treatment, and their cancers tends to be more aggressive, he said.

Someday, Dr. Daoud added, science will know enough about the identity of different genes and cancers so treatment can be tailored to individual tumors and more effective than the general approaches that exist.
