The remarks are part of the awards ceremony for Imagine Tomorrow, a University-sponsored competition for high school students designed to challenge them to identify alternative solutions for meeting society's energy needs. Hayes' remarks and recognition of the competition winners begins at 7 p.m. in Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum. Admission is free.

National influence
Named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Look magazine, and one of the National Audubon Society's 100 Environmental Heroes of the 20th century, Hayes coordinated the first Earth Day in 1970. Twenty years later he headed the first International Earth Day, with 200 million participants in 141 countries.

Today, Hayes is president and chief executive officer of the Bullitt Foundation, an influential environmental foundation located in Seattle. An environmental lawyer by training, he has published more than 100 articles, books, and papers on energy and the environment.

Competition features ingenuity of high school students
Some 400 high school students from throughout Washington will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money during Imagine Tomorrow. Entries range from inventions for reducing CO2 emissions through sustainable technologies and ideas for redesigning living/working spaces to demonstrations on how local communities can reduce their dependency on fossil fuels.
