New high school competition seeks fresh solutions to global energy needs.

Launching new energy initiatives may be a talking point for presidential candidates, but it’s an action item for hundreds of Washington high school students—thanks to a new competition hosted by Washington State University. With vision, hope, and solid research, Imagine Tomorrow contestants will present fresh ideas for alternative-energy solutions that could make the world a better place.
“This is a great opportunity to get teenagers thinking about the big issues of our time. They will see how they can make a difference,” said M. Grant Norton, associate dean in the College of Engineering and Architecture and a competition organizer.
Denis Hayes to deliver keynote address
This year’s theme, Power Your Future, asks students to find creative solutions to the world’s future energy needs. One of Time magazine’s “Heroes of the Planet,” Denis Hayes, will deliver the event’s keynote address. Hayes is board chair of the International Earth Day Network, former director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and president of the Bullitt Foundation.
The state’s business and opinion leaders will serve as judges alongside University faculty—many of whom are volunteering their expertise to plan the competition. Additional volunteers are welcome.
Competition to award prizes up to $5,000
Thanks to the generosity and vision of Imagine Tomorrow sponsors, the competition will award prizes of up to $5,000 for the students and their schools who present the best overall ideas.
The University will host the first annual competition May 9-11 on the Pullman campus.
