As associate vice president for university relations at Washington State University, Barbara Petura currently leads organizational communication focused on institutional strategic goals, internal communication for the Pullman campus, as well as oversight of WSU's major periodicals, WSU Today and Washington State Magazine.
Over a 38-year career in university communications, she has worked in media relations, periodicals writing and editing, public relations, marketing, Web site content management, and more for three public universities in the Northwest. They are Washington State University (1985 to present), the University of Oregon (1979-1985) and the University of Idaho (1970-1979).
She has been chair of District VIII of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education or CASE, a member and then chair of the CASE Commission on Communication and Marketing, and a member of the CASE International Board of Trustees.
She was honored for her leadership and contributions with the Distinguished Service Award from CASE District VIII at the 2007 District Conference in Boise, Idaho. She also garnered a CASE VIII Silver Award for the WSU Presidential Search Web site, developed with a team of colleagues. In 2008, she was named Mentor of the Year for Administrative/Professional staff at WSU.
Locally, she is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Pullman and serves on the United Way of Pullman Board of Directors.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in English, magna cum laude, at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1965. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts honorary, Mortar Board service honorary, Kappa Delta sorority, and is listed in Who's Who in Education and Who's Who in American Women.
