SHRIMP SCAMPI



Almost every pretentious restaurant’s menu these days features a dish called “shrimp scampi,” which is meant to imply some vaguely Italian recipe for shrimp. “Scampi” are a sort of “shrimp” in Italian,* so “shrimp scampi” is a redundancy. What’s next—“veal vitello” and “cheese formaggio?”


*Specifically prawns, which are only a largish variety of shrimp. You wouldn’t call a dish “shrimp prawns" now, would you?
