Writers of Color Courses for Fall 2006:
*****************
We have encountered a couple of issues of which you should be aware:
1. Engl 380, 381 (now for fall 480, 481) are not offered this fall. You may use Engl 368 to substitute for Engl 381 if you wish and if, in the extreme circumstance of a student perhaps graduating in December who needs this requirement, you can also substitute Engl 482. Both of these courses are offered this coming fall semester.
2. We have encountered a problem with DARS. Unfortunately, it will probably not be repaired until next week sometime. The problem is that English classes which count in the major requirements are also being shown in the College of Science and Liberal Arts GERs under Arts and Humanities. Please be careful, when you are advising students, to look at that area to see whether or not they have REALLY satisfied those requirements.
**************
Thanks to Lynn Gordon's sharp eye, we have caught an error in the DARS programming which caused some students to receive GER credit for an H class and also again for the additional College of Liberal Arts requirement. Some students have even been given CLA credit for classes that were also counted toward their major.
The glitch has been fixed, but that now means that some students who thought they were through are short of some requirements.
Since advisors didn't catch this earlier and it was a technical problem with DARS, students caught in this trap may petition to have the requirement waived so they can graduate this May or June. See Jerri Smith about the details.
Be careful to scrutinize the old DARS reports to make sure classes aren't being counted twice. If you've filled out the paper forms correctly you should be safe.

To all English Education advisors:
Paul Brians asked me to write to you regarding a DARS error for one of his English Education advisees. Her DARS indicates that she needs to take T&L 445: Elementary Methods of Educational Technology instead of what she should be taking, which is T&L 446: Secondary Methods of Educational Technology. T&L 446 is a relatively new course (445 used to cover both levels), and it would appear that the degree audit for this particular student has not caught up with the requirement. I suspect this may be a fairly rare occurrence as opposed to a systematic problem with DARS, as I have not noticed this problem in any of my own students. However, we wanted to let everyone know so you can keep any eye out for this potential problem. If you do notice this problem on your advisees’ DARS, please contact Vicki Dehlbom, Academic Coordinator for the T&L program, at 335-7682 or dehlbomv@wsu.edu, and ask her to make the substitution.
