Directions for Final Portfolio

Due Date: December 1, 2006 in class

By the end of English 302, you'll have a portfolio of writings showing your ability to interpret various kinds of texts. Since the last paper (on texts and contexts) will not be turned in until after the portfolio is due, the portfolio you turn in will include the four papers you will have turned in December 1, 2006.

Guidelines

Papers

  1. You have the option to revise any two of the papers or projects in your portfolio and resubmit them for a different grade. The three unrevised papers in the course (including the "texts and contexts" paper) will count 30% toward your final grade; the two revised papers that you choose will count 45% together. Revised papers will not receive comments but will receive a grade.
  2. The papers in your portfolio must be those that you turned in earlier in the semester and that bear the written comments of your discussion leader. You cannot print out fresh copies for this assignment.
  3. Note that although revising two of your papers is generally in your best interest, it is not required. You can instead select two unrevised papers to be weighted more heavily, or you can revise one paper and choose another unrevised one to be part of the 45% portion of your grade.
  4. You cannot revise more than two papers, and the two papers that you revise will be the two given the most weight.

Reflection Letter

As part of your portfolio, you’ll also write a short reflection letter of no more than two typed, double-spaced pages addressed to your discussion leader. This letter will provide a context for her understanding of your portfolio; in it, you’ll reflect on and analyze what you’ve learned in the course, discuss the content of your papers, and comment on the types of interpretive skills you have gained. The letter will count 10 points, or as much as a quiz. An assignment sheet for this part of the portfolio will be handed out later and discussed in your discussion section.

Portfolio Contents

Your portfolio will consist of the following:

1. A folder with pockets for holding the papers. Write your name on the outside of the folder.

2. The four papers you have written for the course, including your papers on rhetoric, on literature, on visual rhetoric, on creative writing, and, if it is available, the paper on texts and contexts.

3. The Portfolio Cover Page. The Portfolio Cover Page is attached to this page; you can also print it from WebCT or our web site. Place this in one of the pockets of the folder.

4. A short reflection letter. Place this in one of the pockets of the folder.

Your portfolios are due in class on December 1, 2006. They will be available for you to pick up from your discussion leaders during finals week.
