Cougar Academic Team Support
A program sponsored by the Department of Residence Life and the Student Advising and Learning Center at Washington State University.
CATS is a program designed specifically for first-year students to enhance their academic and social integration into college. The program in the Spring semester deals directly with reinstatement students whose first semester at WSU has not been productive for one reason or another. In this program, students will investigate their transition to college through both workshops and team meetings. The development of peer support groups, shown to be the cornerstone to college success, is a foremost goal in the team settings.
The program, beginning its fifth year in the Spring of 2002, supports Washington State University's goal of enriching the undergraduate experience of its students as well as helping with the institution's goal of retaining students through graduation. The Spring program evolved into a Fall experience which provided students an opportunity to more closely explore and apply college success strategies to their transition from high school to the college environment. The Fall course is a one-credit class facilitated by upper-division students who complete a semester-long leadership class prior to their involvement with students in the classroom setting; they also receive on-going weekly training throughout the program's length.
