History of ΤΒΣ ΘΔ

The Theta Delta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was founded April 1, 1989 in Pullman Washington.  Seven members of the music department at Washington State University were the first members.  WSU did not have a service organization able to serve its 200 member Cougar Marching Band until then.  The Alpha Class that went through in the fall of 1989 boasted three members and has been going strong ever since.  The latest addition to Theta Delta was the fall of 1999 Xi class, with six members.

Theta Delta has had 85 members thus far with three more prospective members in the spring of 2000.   On the tenth anniversary last year, Theta Delta was busy preparing the Western District Convention, co-hosted by brother chapter Iota Gamma form Washington State University.  Theta Delta had 100% of its active members in attendance.

Unfortunately, Theta Delta has not been strong in keeping a year-by-year history of events and accomplishments.  In the past three years, we have put an emphasis on keeping scrapbooks and photo albums.  Cameras catch most service, social and rituals that Theta Delta participates in.  We also fill out bio forms about each member with individual pictures so members fifty years from now will know what we were once like.

In January of 1998, WSU made it to the Rose Bowl, an event that had not occurred in 67 years.  It was with great pride that our sisters were able to represent their school in the Rose Bowl Parade and in the playing of the National Anthem.  Our sisters partook in a Sisterhood Dinner during the week they were in California.  Many members feel this is their favorite memory during their time with the chapter.

Currently, Theta Delta has eighteen active members, 9 male and 9 female.  We are proud of our co-ed status and it has made us stronger as a chapter to have equal representation from both genders.  One of our sisters is currently serving as the Western District President and helping us all start a new century of service for the bands.

In the past year we have created a new position, Vice President of Post Membership Education (VPPME) and overhauled our education program for prospective members.  We are focusing on how to make our members more knowledgeable and enthusiastic about serving music programs and how to be a strong sister.  We are looking forward to the next ten years (and more) of serving bands in the bonds of Tau Beta Sigma and Theta Delta.
