5. By the time of the writing of the Mahabharata, Vishnu had become the chief god. Together with Shiva and Brahma, the creator god, Vishnu makes up the one god in three parts, the trimurti. Krishna is an avatar, or human manifestation, of Vishnu. "Adityas": the gods of celestial light, whose chief is Vishnu.
