Footnotes

1. The Kshetra is in the first the field (Kshetra) on which the battle is taking place. That field is construed by Krishna to be a metaphor for the embodied self, that is, the combination of the consciousness (purusha) with nature (prakriti), or the spirit and the body. The "knower of the field" (Kshetryajna) is the one who understands the precise relationship between the self as consciousness (atman) and the self as nature (jiva) and, through this knowledge, liberates the self as consciousness from nature.
