4. These are the three qualities (triguna) of nature: lucidity (sattva), passion (rajas), and dark inertia (tamas). They are discussed in great detail in the Gita chapter on the three qualities. The three qualities do not cause phenomenal reality, but they lie at the heart of it and determine the quality or character of phenomenal reality, including human life, perception, thought, and understanding.
