MYTHOLOGY EXAM 2

MYTHOLOGY EXAM:
THE NINTH WONDER OF THE WORLD

Your last obligation to this course will be an exam, questions and answers for which will concern only the works covered from after the midterm exam through the end of the semester: that's the Greek plays, through Metamorphoses, and the other mythological materials during these last several weeks. Here is the plan for the last exam.

I. SHORT ANSWER / IDENTIFICATIONS. [Total 30 points.]

On the designated day for the "final thing," you will rely on the breadth and depth of your absorption of the class materials in order to answer an assortment of questions, primarily but perhaps not exclusively identification based. This portion of the exam will be inflicted on you individually at the beginning of the last class period, December 8th.

II. QUOTATIONS / GROUP WORK. [Total 50 points; 5 points each.]

For the remainder of that designated day's class time, you may work in a group whose size and personnel are your own decision, and you may use any books, notes, or other resources as you wish, in order to answer mostly quotation based questions: combinations of identification and, more importantly, significance questions based on literary quotations, images, or any other class materials.

III. TAKE-HOME ESSAY. [Total 20 points.]

Do this part before you take the other portions on the last day! (I call it Part 3 because it's the last portion I read and the culmination of your performance in the class, not because it's an afterthought for you.) The essay should be an original and virtuoso piece of glory, with a unified perspective and fine critical thinking, manifested in impressive eloquence, with facile reference to specifics from the class materials (character names, literary moments, even quotations), and amounting to about two (2) pages, double-spaced.

DUE: Most felicitous would be if the essay came in on the last day of class to accompany the other in-class components of the exam, and you'll be completely done; but I will accept these until 10:00 am, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13th. E-mail it (and be sure to get a confirmation of receipt back from me), or deliver it to 355 Avery Hall (under the door if I'm not in). One second after 10:00 am, though, and tough luck, Winky, no matter what.

BIG DAY: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8th, 10:35 pm.
