I moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1998 to complete a PhD in Rhetoric and Technical Communication at Michigan Technological University. Course work took about two years, comps took another year, the diss took about a year, and somewhere in there I spent another year. I think it got lost!

My areas of concentration were Composition (with an emphasis on the historical), Rhetoric (with an emphasis on kairos and decorum), and Technology, Agency, and Education. My dissertation, Beyond the Laments, Beyond the Boundaries: Communicating about Composition, concerns the issues that cause problems in communicating about composition to those outside our discipline. The impetus for this dissertation was the assessment work that I did at DSU as Director of Writing Programs there.
