Water reclamation is the treatment of municipal waste water
and the resuse of this water for irrigation and other nonportab le uses.
In 1985, the City of Los Angeles used only around 1 KAF/yr of reclaimed
water. (The water was used for parks, golf courses and green belts.) The
1985 Urban Water Management Plan envisioned that reclaimed water
could supply 10 KAF/yr by the year 2010. When the 1991 Plan was released,
the goal for reclaimed water use in 2010 had grown to 33 KAF/yr. Most estimates
of water supply from reclamation projects are constrained by uncertainties
over the health effects of reclaimed water.
