OVERVIEW
Washington State University encourages recycling of waste materials at all campuses in order to conserve energy, recover resources, protect the environment, save on disposal costs, and generate revenue.
WSU seeks to provide an exemplary teaching, research, and outreach environment that fosters the conservation of natural resources, supports and enhances social responsibility, addresses community and economic development, and follows environmental, social, and economic practices. (EPM EP24)
State law requires state agencies to set an example by implementing aggressive waste reduction and recycling programs at agency workplaces and by purchasing products that are made from recycled materials and are recyclable. (RCW 70.95.010)
WSU Pullman Campus
At the WSU Pullman campus, Facilities Operations Waste Management provides recycling services in addition to other waste management services.
All buildings at the WSU Pullman campus are equipped with efficient and effective recycling options to divert waste.

Waste Management is responsible for collection and marketing of all collected commodities on the WSU Pullman campus. For assistance or information regarding recycling services, special events, and programs, contact Waste Management; telephone 335-4530.
Non-Pullman Locations
Non-Pullman WSU locations rely on municipal or commercial centers for recycling services.

PROCEDURES (WSU PULLMAN)
Nonresidential Building Recycling
In each nonresidential building at the WSU Pullman campus, Waste Management collects the following items in recycling bins:
- White Paper--includes copier paper, notebook paper, and draft paper.
- Mixed Paper--includes colored paper, Post-its, envelopes, junk mail,
paper board, magazines, and catalogs.- Newspaper--includes inserts.
- Aluminum--includes beverage cans.
- Plastic--includes water and beverages bottles and juice bottles.
- Glass--includes clear, green, and brown glass. NOTE: Does not include broken glass, tempered, plate or Pyrex glass, ceramics, or light bulbs.
- Cardboard--includes pizza boxes. Flattened and placed in hallways for custodians to pick up.
- Shredded paper--Shredded paper should be placed in a separate bag and tied.
Confidential Material
Any material containing confidential information must be shredded. See 90.01, 90.05, 90.06, and 90.07 regarding identification and disposition of confidential materials.
Waste Management provides locked bins upon request to gather confidential materials for pickup and shredding. Contact Waste Management for more information.
Large Quantities
Contact Waste Management prior to recycling large quantities of office materials. See also 90.01.
University Residence Hall
In each residence hall at the WSU Pullman campus, Waste Management collects aluminum, tin, glass, newspaper, and cardboard in recycling bins.
University Apartment Building
In each University apartment building at the WSU Pullman campus, Waste Management collects aluminum, tin, glass, newspaper, and cardboard in drop boxes located at central locations.
Nonrecyclable Trash
Place nonrecyclable items in trash containers. Nonrecyclable items include:
- Plastic or foil coated paper
- Photographs
- Candy bar and food wrappers
- Tissues and hand towels
- Paper clips
- Rubber bands
- Carbon paper
- X-rays
- Overhead transparency materials
- Microfiche
Public Recycling Station
Located on Dairy Road, Waste Management's Public Recycling Station is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The Public Recycling Station accepts items listed below:
- Aluminum cans
- Aluminum foil
- Cardboard
- Glass bottles
- Magazines
- Milk or drink cartons
- Mixed paper
- Newspapers
- Pallets
- Paperboard
- Plastic bottles (#1 and #2)
- Plastic bags
- Athletic shoes
- Steel (tin) cans
- Small batteries, e.g., AA, AAA, C, D batteries, used in homes, or University residence halls or apartments (not automobile batteries). EXCEPTION: Batteries used by WSU departments or employees at work are considered to be regulated hazardous waste and may not be deposited at the Public Recycling Station. Such batteries must be disposed of accordance to the procedures in SPPM S70.40.
