Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

The GeoAnalytical Lab houses a Perkin-Elmer Spectrum GX FTIR, used to obtain high-quality infrared spectra of geological materials. In addition to the main optical bench used for conventionally prepared samples, a microscope attachment allows in-situ study of small objects (<100 microns) in both transmittance and reflectance mode. The instrument is chiefly employed for the determination of water concentrations in volcanic glasses and nominally anhydrous minerals.
