Geology 101 Photo Project Guidelines:

The idea is to have you apply what you have learned in this course.  So go out and actively look at your surroundings. You will need to take photograph(s) of some kind of geological feature(s) then label and describe what you see.  NO photos from the internet!!

Ask your self - What do you see in the photo geologically?

Your audience - Label and describe the features and processes involved for an interested adult, such as a high school science teacher,  who has not had a geology course but has some knowledge and understanding.

The topics are not limited to lecture or lab.  Remember you can look up the features in your book or the library.  You are encouraged to work on the project early and talk with your TA or myself for help or hints about your photos.

All photos must be original, taken by you or when you were present.  Photos can be taken at any location except along the Moscow-Pullman highway or within Pullman (exception – if you do not have a car or access to transportation contact me so we can make other arrangements).

You may use photos you have taken from previous trips as long as you make arrangements ahead of time.

No internet photos, except for location maps (ex. Google images) are allowed.  Internet photos passed off as your own will substantially reduce your score (ie. a zero).

What’s it worth?

50 points plus up to 10 bonus points for well labeled and described photos (10 bonus points potentially represents a 2% change in your lecture grade).   Students who scored above a 50 usually had photos that covered multiple topics.

How do I get started?

First, look through the online examples to give yourself an idea of the level of detail that is expected.

Following these text slides, there is a photo project which illustrates what is needed to score 20pts, 40pts or 60pts.  Each increment in bonus points requires more photos with additional features labeled and described.

The last 3 slides in this set illustrate two examples of what to avoid in a project.

Other projects that are available for you to look at are:

Example 1: Powerpoint presentation clickable from lecture web page

Example 2: Powerpoint presentation clickable from lecture web page

These are PowerPoint presentations saved to CD that also scored full credit and above.

See the Grading Criteria below for details on how the Photo Project will be graded.

What needs to be handed in?

Photo projects can be submitted as printouts (maximum page size 8.5” x 11” and may include more than 1 photo per page), as digital images or PowerPoint presentations saved to CD or DVD.  (photos should be recognizable and no smaller than 3 x 5 inches)

Projects will not be accepted by e-mail!

Students without cameras:

If you do not have a camera, you may check out a digital camera from Academic Support Service (Holland Library 150, outside entrance, south side, west door of old Holland Building).  There is no charge for the camera because this is a class project; the only cost is for storage media to record the images.
