PART II: ESSAY (20 points)

DIRECTIONS:
Below is the essay question for the second Midterm. This will be a COMPARE AND CONTRAST type essay. ONE WEEK before the exam two slides from the above list that you will discuss will be announced. You will need to be able to discuss BOTH slides, comparing and contrasting one to the other in light of the statement below. You should prepare an answer in advance, but you may NOT use any notes or outlines during the exam. We will provide the paper on which to write. See the STUDY GUIDE, which should be helpful in thinking about and preparing your essay. Read the following carefully and use the question itself to help structure your answer (note point distribution).

1) Be able to identify them (fill in the blanks, Title, Culture, Style Period, Artist if applicable). Spelling will count - if it's spelled wrong, it's WRONG! (4 points, 2 points each work):

2) Then, in a well-written and well-organized essay, discuss the two works in terms of the following statement:

Both of the images chosen are TRYING TO TELL A PARTICULAR STORY OR CONVEY A SPECIFIC MESSAGE. In each case, the artist is using a combination of symbolic and stylistic means to enhance the clarity and meaning of the work.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST THESE WORKS IN TERMS OF:

1) the particular story and/or message(s) each work is trying to convey (4 points, 2 points each)

2) the SYMBOLIC MEANS (if any) the artists employ in each work to enhance the story or message (6 points, 3 points each)

3) the STYLISTIC MEANS the artists have chosen to depict their works (6 points, 3 points each)

Remember to discuss BOTH slides - how are they SIMILAR and how are they DIFFERENT! NOTE THE POINT VALUES and use your time accordingly - where there are more points, give more time/information.
