Dickinson's part of the course outlined several general aspects of the characterization of materials and then covered a few topics associated with the use of mass spectroscopy.   The latter was concerned with electron impact ionization and the use of lasers to ionize neutral atoms and molecules.

Your assignment is to go to the literature to find a single article on the use of mass spectroscopy or a mass spectrometer in a scientific or technological study of interest to you.  This could be, for example, a study using SIMS, MALDI, laser ablation, ion desorption, neutral desorption;  it might deal with surface analysis, surface chemistry, materials modification, defects, etc.  Choose one article that interests you, (please do not choose one you have already read) read the article carefully, and produce a 2-3 page summary (you may put in 2-3 small figures photocopied from article);   summarize at the end your opinion of the value/quality of the article and possible future work that would seem appropriate.
