Plant form

Small, upright, deciduous shade tree with spring flowers and edible fruit.  Often multi-stemmed.

Size

25 to 30 feet tall and about half as wide.

Leaves and stems

Simple leaves with fine teeth.  Medium green during the summer, turning red and orange in the fall. Bark is smooth and gray.

Flowers

Tree is covered with loose clusters of small white flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge.  Some cultivars have pink color in the bud stage.

Fruit

Pea-sized fruit follow the flowers on some cultivars.  Fruit turns red and then blackish.  Slightly sweet and edible.

Native area

Hybrid from species native in the eastern US.

Water use

Moderate or low.

Light

Full sun or shade.

Culture and maintenance

This tree is tolerant of a wide range of conditions.

Hardiness

USDA Zone 4-9.

'Autumn Brilliance' is a popular cultivar that was selected for exceptional flowering and fall color.
