Washington
State University has the largest
doctoral program in materials science in the Northwest. This means
you will have excellent facilities to engage in top research with
internationally renowned faculty.
Materials
Science is the playground for Engineers, Chemists, and Physicists
who want to work together to change our world. At Washington State
University we offer an exciting program that allows BS or MS Chemists,
Physicist, or Engineers to train together for the PhD in an environment
that reflects all the interdisciplinary
interaction that is modern Materials Science. As a student here
you will have access to a diversity of projects and viewpoints on
the cutting edge of the field. By embracing students and faculty
with many backgrounds, we provide a stronger and deeper learning
experience – both for the students PhD project, and for his
life long career in a discipline that demands multi-specialty collaborations.
The Materials
Science Program is one of the fastest growing PhD programs in Science
or Engineering on the WSU campus. As an entering student, you will
be joining a mix of scientists and engineers who want a deeper understanding
of the complex connections between synthesis, characterization,
modeling and design of materials. Whether your background is synthesizing
new compounds, computational physics, or measuring fracture strength,
we have a place for you to grow in our program. You should also
note that all of our students receive financial
support.
A typical student
will complete his or her required core courses and qualifying exam
in the first year, and will be well started on their PhD research
by the end of the second year. Throughout your time here at WSU
you will keep in contact with your fellow students through our weekly
Materials Science seminars. Our low student
to faculty ratio
provides students with plenty of face to face interaction with the
faculty. Students that graduate with a doctoral degree in materials
science from Washington State University are highly sought after
by industries, national laboratories, and academia.
