The Application Process

Start your search for application materials and requirements at the university's web site. Go to the graduate school's home page and look up their requirements. Then, go to the department's home page to view their requirements. Pay close attention to different deadlines for admission and for financial aid consideration. Also note that even if the department tells you that you are in, you may not be accepted if you do not meet the graduate school requirements, and visa versa.

An application usually consists of:

Application Forms
There are always forms that asks for the essential information the institution and program will use when processing your application. They should be filled out accurately and typed. Be consistent in spelling out your full, legal name on all forms.

As soon as you have identified the schools to which you will apply, request application forms to be sent to you. You may be able to download a copy from the graduate school's home page. Many schools and programs also offer an on-line application option. All applications are different, so pay close attention to all form instructions and details.

Undergraduate Transcripts
Graduate programs require official transcripts of all college work that you have attempted. Even one or two courses taken at another institution should be reported via transcript. Order transcripts from all of your postsecondary institutions early in the process.

Standardized Test Scores

When you look at the requirements for admission to a graduate program, you should determine whether you need to take a test such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or another test appropriate to your field. For the GRE it is important to note whether a specific subject test is required in addition to the general exam.

Test scores are only one of several factors that admissions committees consider in reviewing your application. Working with a good test preparation book is highly recommended. Set aside 2 to 3 months before your scheduled exam date to prepare.
