Current Research Interests

This past summer I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Mudziviri Nziramasanga to conduct research entitled "'Everything is Fine': The impact NAFTA has had on Mexican Labor Conditions."  I presented my work at the 2nd annual Washington State University McNair Research Symposium and the 10th annual Ronald E. McNair National Research Conference. I hope to also present at the NACCS conference in spring 2002.

Abstract
The purpose of the project was to explore whether employment in the maquiladora materiallyimproved the welfare of employees  when compared to their previous occupations. I collected data on current wages and non-wage benefits as well as other conditions of employment. I also gathered information on previous employment and where it was located, educational attainment, family size and location. I also used qualitative measures. Although maquiladoras increased job opportunities, my preliminary findings show no improvements in welfare.
