Abstract

Analyzing the challenges of Latinas in PhD programs

There is such a low number of Latinas graduating from PhD programs compared to all other ethnic groups. My research consists of interviewing Latinas at Washington State University that are currently in PhD programs. Common themes will then be analyzed. The information will then be used to create a pamphlet for younger Latinas on how to prepare for graduate school.

Biography

I grew up in Tri-cities, lived there since I was six years old. I was raised by my mom, who recently graduated a couple years ago from W.S.U. Tri-Cities, with a degree in Bilingual Education. She is currently teaching in Tri-Cities. From her example and encouragement, I always knew that I was going to college. Yet, even from her experience, my experience concerning college was limited because of the fact that I had to go away for college and she never had to, she finished her degree in her mid-thirties at the W.S.U. Tri-Cities campus. The Pullman and Tri-cities campus have many differences. These differences set me back for a little while. Yet, despite those differences, I am graduating Spring of 2003 and planning to attend graduate school in California. The programs I am looking into are a combination of education, counseling psychology, and ethnic studies. This would be a continuation of my undergraduate studies. I plan on working as an academic advisor as well as teach at either a high school or college/university.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Involved in Chicano/Latino Student Organizations such as Mujeres Unidas and M.E.Ch.A,play the flute, community service, yoga, running/walking, scrapbooking, writing letters to family and friends, photography.
