In the summer
of 2001, I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Kim Wade to conduct
research entitled, "Appraisal Process From the Manager's Perspective:
A Grounded Investigation." I presented my work at the 2nd
annual Washington State University McNair Research Symposium and
the 10th annual Ronald E. McNair National Research Conference in
Delavan, Wisconsin. Currently I'm attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University and working for Boeing. I'm working on my M.S. in Technical
Management.
Abstract
The appraisal literature suggests a discrepancy between subordinate
and managerial perceptions of the appraisal process. This study
focuses on managerial perspectives by using a qualitative interview
technique to gather data from managers regarding performance appraisal.
Findings suggest that managers view appraisal systems as effective
tools to communicate expectations between supervisors and subordinates.
Managers are also aware that perception is an important factor,
which contributes to an effective appraisal system. Findings also
suggest that in certain environments it is difficult to assess performance.
Managers should therefore rely on 360 degree feedback, including
feedback sources such as peers, customers, self and subordinates.
