Course Objectives: GEOLOGY 102 is designed to introduce you to earth materials (minerals and rocks) and the physical processes that operate on the surface and within the Earth. Emphasis will be on large-scale processes, such as mountain building, plate tectonics, volcanism, and seismicity. We also will discuss surficial systems, such as rivers, deserts, glaciers, and landscape development. Additionally we will discuss environmental aspects of geology and geologic hazards. The Earth is a dynamic planet and has been evolving for 4.6 billion years. We will attempt to understand our planet's genesis through an understanding of Earth processes as well as examine environmental issues that affect our planet today.
General: Geology 102 is designed for science majors and therefore is more rigorous than Geology 101. This course consists of 3 hours of lecture and a 3-hour lab every week. You must be enrolled in both a lab and lecture section or you will not receive credit for this course.
Laboratory: Geology 102 Laboratory consists of a 3-hour long, hands-on lab. Lab begins the second week of classes (Jan. 17th). All lab assignments will be completed and turned in during the lab period. Homework assignments may be assigned during lab time and will be handed in at the beginning of the following lab period.
Lab Supplies: The following lab supplies are required during lab: laboratory manual, a notebook, a protractor, a ruler, pencils, an eraser, and a calculator.
Attendance: Attendance in laboratory is mandatory. Provisions will be made for those of you with night exams, however you must notify Kelly prior to your absence.
Lab Exams: There will be 2 lab exams given during lab time. The first lab exam will be mostly recognizing rocks and minerals in hand-samples. The final lab exam will cover material mostly from the second half of the semester.
Academic Integrity: Any violation of academic integrity will result in immediate dismissal from the course and the receipt of a failing grade. Academic dishonesty includes the failure to do you own work on any assignment (exams, quizzes, assignments, and labs). University Policies and Regulations, and Standards of Conduct are found in the 2004-2005 Student Handbook available online at www.studentaffairs.wsu.edu/students/handbook
Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have a documented disability. Please notify the instructor during the first week of class of any accommodations needed for the course. Late notification may cause the requested accommodations to be unavailable. All accommodations must be approved through the Disability Resource Center (DRC) in Administration Annex 206, 335-3417.
Grading: Letter grades will be assigned based upon a percentage of total points (300) earned from the lecture exams, the laboratory, and the fieldtrip. This course is broken into a lecture (60% 180 pts.), laboratory (30% 90 pts.), and fieldtrip (10% 30 pts.). The lecture and laboratory components must both be passed individually for a passing grade in this course. This grading scheme is subject to change and you will be notified of any changes.

Fieldtrip: There is a mandatory one-day fieldtrip scheduled for Saturday April 15, 2005. The fieldtrip is 10% of the class grade. This fieldtrip will begin and end at the loading dock behind Webster Hall. We will travel through the Palouse, down to Clarkston/Lewiston and return through Idaho seeing a variety of rocks and geologic structures. You will be given a handout with questions to answer during the fieldtrip. The completed handout will be turned in and graded for the 10%.

Extra Credit: There is the potential to earn 10 extra points for perfect lecture attendance. I will pass around a class list each lecture and there will be three days that count as double attendance so you may miss up to 3 days and still earn the 10 points.
